Who can benefit from Havening Techniques®?
A clinician-friendly approach to regulation and distress reduction.
The science of healing
Havening Techniques® are a psychosensory approach that pairs soothing touch with structured distraction. Clinically, the aim is to reduce distress and support nervous system regulation—often by softening the emotional intensity associated with stressful or traumatic memories.
Versatile application in clinical and coaching settings
Many licensed practitioners integrate Havening alongside existing modalities to support stabilization, reduce arousal, and help clients access a more settled state. It can also complement coaching and performance work when stress responses interfere with clarity, choice, and forward movement.
Havening may be a strong fit for:
-
Licensed practitioners: as an additional tool for regulation, stabilization, and reducing distress
-
Clients seeking emotional calm: especially when anxiety, overwhelm, or activation is present
-
People doing deeper emotional work: where lowering arousal helps therapy move more smoothly
-
Coaches and helping professionals: when stress responses or old patterns block insight and change
Why clinicians choose Havening
Havening can be integrated as a standalone intervention or used alongside other modalities as a brief regulation tool—often at the start of a session for settling, or during emotionally charged material to reduce distress and support engagement.
1) Clinical and therapeutic settings
Havening is used by many practitioners as a gentle, structured intervention to support regulation and reduce distress. It may be helpful for clients who feel quickly overwhelmed, have strong physiological activation, or benefit from an embodied calming experience before engaging in deeper processing.
2) Coaching, performance, and high-stress roles
In coaching contexts, Havening can support emotional regulation when stress responses, nervous system activation, or recurring patterns interfere with clarity and follow-through. When the system settles, clients often access insight and choice with more ease.
3) Mind–body practices
Havening can complement mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and somatic practices by helping clients downshift more quickly into a calmer state. It may be especially useful when stress or anxiety makes it difficult to settle through breath or attention alone.
4) Integration alongside established modalities
Many practitioners use Havening alongside approaches such as CBT, EMDR, and psychotherapy—often as a regulation tool to support stabilization, widen the window of tolerance, or reduce distress before/after emotionally intense material.
5) Creative therapies
Havening may support engagement with creative therapies by reducing arousal and helping clients feel more resourced. When the nervous system is steadier, clients may access emotion, meaning, and expression with more safety and flexibility.
6) Bodywork and physical therapies
Some practitioners integrate Havening alongside bodywork or physiotherapy to support nervous system settling when pain, stress, or protective tension is present. The focus remains on regulation and the client’s felt sense of safety.
7) Complementary regulation approaches
Some practitioners also use Havening alongside other brief regulation methods (e.g., tapping-based approaches) depending on client preference and training. In all cases, the intention is to support settling, reduce distress, and increase capacity for therapeutic work.
Research and publications
Havening Techniques® are a newer psychosensory approach, and the research base is continuing to grow. If you’d like to review the published papers and references, Havening Headquarters maintains an official list of research and publications.
